Sharjah-based Tamir Printing Press in the UAE has invested in various machines, from pre-press to post press.

The purchase includes a thermal platesetter from Screen Plate, a four-colour sheetfed offset press Rapida 75 from KBA with a water-based coater, infra-red dryer and extended delivery.

In post press, the company has installed a booklet maker from Duplo and a Shoei folding machine.

Talking to PrintWeek MEA, the company’s managing director, Thomas George said: “We placed the orders in June and July last year, anticipating growth in the market.  Although volumes have come down by about 25% at present, the business is still manageable. Our strategy is simply to survive and so far, we are achieving that.”

While choosing the machines, George said: “We were looking at the usefulness of brand functions as per our requirements.  The pricing was never given utmost importance.”

He added: “We went for a B2 sized press because of space restrictions and also because we do not have sufficient power to run bigger machines. We selected the KBA 75 because it is one of the best printing machines in the market and we particularly liked its solid printing, which has the correct quality and depth”, he added.

George said that the Screen brand was selected since it is “durable when compared with other brands, as well as being easy to operate”.

Commenting on the post press installations George said: “We needed a post press machine since our production has increased. We saw Shoei machines in the market and found them suitable for our needs. The Duplo booklet maker was selected based on its speed of 4,000 books per hour.”

George said the company employs 50 people and has achieved a “25% to 30% annual growth”.
